1. Category Pages Are Hub Pages

Category pages serve a dual purpose:

  • For users: Browse and filter products within a category
  • For SEO: Target high-volume, commercial-intent keywords ("men's running shoes", "wireless headphones")

They typically rank for broader keywords than individual product pages.

3. The Faceted Navigation Problem

Filters (brand, color, size, price) create URL variations:

Without proper handling, faceted navigation can create millions of crawlable, duplicate URLs that destroy crawl budget.

Solutions: Pick ONE primary strategy (don't combine contradictory signals):

  • Best: AJAX-based filtering — Load filters via JavaScript without changing URLs. No duplicate URLs created.
  • Good: Canonical tags — All faceted URLs use rel="canonical" pointing to the base category. Google treats them as duplicates of the base page.
  • Acceptable: noindex, follow — Faceted pages are crawled but not indexed. Google still follows links to discover products.
  • Avoid: robots.txt blocking — If you block faceted URLs in robots.txt, Google cannot see canonical or noindex tags on those pages, which can make duplicate content problems worse.

Google wants to see unique, valuable content on category pages — not just a product grid:

  • Above-fold intro: 2-3 sentences about the category, naturally including the primary keyword
  • Below-fold content: 300-500 words covering buying advice, category overview, or FAQ
  • Don't overdo it: A 5,000-word essay on a category page hurts UX. Keep it helpful and scannable.

Common Mistakes

  • No content on category pages: A bare product grid with zero text gives Google nothing to rank for. Add intro and guide content.
  • Uncontrolled faceted navigation: Filter URLs creating millions of duplicate pages that eat crawl budget.
  • Keyword cannibalization between categories: "Running Shoes" and "Jogging Shoes" categories targeting the same keyword. Merge or differentiate.
  • Too many products per page: 500 products on one page = slow load + poor UX. Use pagination.
  • Noindexing paginated pages: Page 2, 3, etc. contain unique products that need crawling. Don't noindex them.
  • Thin subcategories: A subcategory with 2 products adds no value. Fold into the parent category until there's enough inventory.
